Getting the Most from Tremco’s Dymonic 100 High Performance, High Movement Polyurethane Sealant
Unlike Tremco’s Dymonic, which is a high-performance expansion joint sealant with low elasticity, Dymonic 100 is a high-performance polyurethane sealant that allows for significant movement. It has low-VOC, is UV stable, won’t sag and will adhere to damp or green concrete with ease. This high-movement sealant comes in over 20 different colours and comes in a 300 ml cartridge or 600 ml sausage. (It has a coverage of 308 linear feet per gallon with a 1/4″ x 1/4″ joint.) And it meets the requirements set out by several organizations and regulatory bodies throughout the US and Canada.
Preparing to Apply Tremco Dymonic 100 Polyurethane Sealant
Tremco created Dymonic 100 to provide construction and repair professionals with a durable, flexible sealant that maintains its adhesion level even after it has fully cured. This makes it ideal for expansion or control joints, but it can also be used on concrete panel joints as well as aluminum, masonry and vinyl siding. Dymonic 100 is also suitable as a perimeter caulking around doors, windows and panels and joints that will be immersed in water. It’s also fully compatible with many other Tremco products including Vulkem deck coatings, ExoAir barrier products and TREMproof fireproofing products. The horizontal or vertical joints simply need to be four times as wide as the expected movement, but not less than 1/4″.
Dymonic 100 from Tremco doesn’t require much prep to get started. To ensure the sealant has solid contact along the length of the joint, install a closed cell or reticulated polyethylene backer rod and allow it time to try. (Polyethylene tape or bond breaker tape will work if there isn’t enough room for a backer rod.) The area should be dry, sound and any debris or contamination should be removed with a wire brush, grinder, sandblaster or solvent.
You can then prime the area with Vulkem Primer #191 Low-VOC primer on porous substances and TREMprime Non-Porous Primer on metals or plastics. However, Dymonic 100 has been designed to adhere to many construction materials without primer. Either way, be sure to test the sealant with the materials you’ll be working with to ensure the product will adhere properly to the surfaces. Then, you’re ready to start applying the sealant.
Applying Tremco Dymonic 100 to Window Perimeters and Expansion Joints
To create a fillet or angle bead around the perimeter of a window or door, simply make sure you have at least 1/4″ of material on each side of the joint to work with. You should also use backer rod or tape to allow for release at the heel of the angle. For expansion joints, the Dymonic 100 bead should be 1/4″ by 1/4″ up to 1/2″. The depth of the bead should be equal to its width any time the joint width is 1/2″ or less. Beads for joints ranging in size from 1/2″ to 1″ should be half as deep as they are wide. Joints over 1″, however, will require additional steps and special care before sealing.
Once applied, Dymonic 100 cures at a rate of 3/32″ per day at standard room temperature. It forms a skin in approximately 2 hours and is tack free in just 6 – 8 hours, but be sure to adjust for situations where the humidity is more or less than 50% and there is an extreme difference in temperature. (The general rule is to add an additional day to the drying time for every 5.5 degree Celsius drop in temperature.) You should also clean up any tools, drips or excess sealant with a bit of xylene or mineral spirits before it has a chance to cure.
As the only one of its kind on the market, Dymonic gives construction and repair professionals the ability to seal expansion joints, control joints and perimeters quickly and easily without having to worry about the quality of the adhesion or seal. However, be aware that this product should not be used for joints that will be immersed or exposed to chlorinated, potable, heavy or waste water. You can also paint Dymonic 100. It works with most paints, but you should check for compatibility before applying paint. Finally, be sure you’re in a well-ventilated room any time you’re working with this sealant and use the proper safety gear.
