Preparing to Use Tremco’s Dymonic FC
One thing most professionals like about Dymonic FC is that this sealant requires very little in terms of prep. While you can use TREMprime Silicone Porous Primer or TREMprime Silicone Metal Primer to prime the joint, Dymonic FC will typically adhere to most materials without a primer. However, you should always do an adhesion test on the materials you’ll be using to make sure they’ll work as expected before using Dymonic FC on your project.
In general, as long as the surfaces you’ll be sealing are dry, solid and free of any sort of debris or contamination, everything should seal properly. If you do find a bit of debris or contamination, you can remove it with a bit of sandblasting, a wire brush, grinding or solvent. (The joint should be four times as wide as the anticipated movement, but no less than 1/4″. Lastly, make sure you’re in a well-ventilated area and the surface temperature is 4 degrees Celsius or more.
Applying Dymonic FC by Tremco to the Joint
Before applying any sealant, you’ll need to install a closed cell or reticulated polyethylene backer rod to control the sealant depth and ensure you get proper adhesion when tooling. If there isn’t enough room for a backer rod, use adhesive backed polyethylene tape to avoid three-sided adhesion. Once everything is dry, make sure you have at least 1/4″ of each substance to work with. Apply a fillet or angle bead around the perimeter of the door or window and allow to dry.
The requirements are a little different if you’ll be working with an expansion joint. The depth of the bead should be equal to its width if the joint is less than 1/2″. Joints ranging in size from 1/2″ to 1″ will require a bead that is half the width, but at least 1/4″ by 1/4″ and no more than 1/2″. You’ll need to contact the experts at Reflect Window and Door if you plan to seal a joint larger than 1″.
Regardless of whether you’re sealing the perimeter of a door or window or an expansion joint, the rest of the process is the same. You should use a spatula to ensure the sealant adheres properly to both sides of the sealant. (You can use xylene to slick the spatula after dry tooling, but dry tooling is always recommended.) Then, you can clean up any excess and tools with a little xylene or mineral spirits and allow the Dymonic FC to cure. This happens at a rate of approximately 3/32″ per day at room temperature. Just keep in mind that a decrease in temperature or humidity can greatly affect the drying time.
Tremco Dymonic FC Sealant does many things other sealants simply can’t. However, there are a few limitations with the product. For example, Dymonic FC should never be used under polyurethane deck coatings unless it’s fully cured first. This sealant is also compatible with many paints, but you should test for compatibility before using it in your project.
